Did you know that barcodes are getting really popular ? At least that’s what ScanBuy claims. The company released a report stating a 700% usage growth from 2010. More scans were performed in a single month starting in July than in all of 2009 !

It seems that Android is responsible for the trend, as 45% of barcode users own a device powered by Google’s mobile OS. Then comes Blackberry (28%), followed by the iPhone (15%), Symbian (9%), Java (3%) and Windows Mobile (1%).

There are a few really cool barcode scanning smart phone apps, such as RedLaser on the iPhone or ShopSavy on Android. I guess they all rely on the powerful Zxing Open Source project under the hoods !
